Abstract

 This paper presents a new approach based on the application of artificial intelligent techniques to solve the unit commitment problem. The proposed approach uses the operator experience, some heuristics, and the application of fuzzy sets theory.  In This approach, load demand, reserve requirements, and production cost are expressed in fuzzy set notations. The "if – then" rules and fuzzy logic operations arc used to find the optimal solution. The heuristics such as dividing the load and generating units into levels are used to speed the solution. 
The approach is applied to two systems, one consists of sour generating units, and the other consists of len units. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach and that it has two advantages: its short processing time and the total operating cost computed is low comparing with other methods.
